Over a century ago, Richard Wheatley set a standard of craftsmanship that has been maintained with pride by his sons and grandsons. Today the 'Wheatley Fly Box' is known and prized by fly fishermen throughout the world, tested and proved by their fathers and grandfathers.

The idea of carrying flies in a box was first introduced into English fishing literature around 1860, when it was suggested that an oblong tin box was superior to the fly book for carrying flies. In 1890 Wheatley was first to commercially produce the tin fly box. In the 1880's the first fly clip was developed by Wheatley to hold eyed flies.

Around 1900 aluminum was introduced on a commercial scale and the Wheatley firm was among the first English manufacturers to use this new material. In 1908 their first aluminum compartment box was made, and within a few years the distinctive 'window' design was incorporated. Wheatley compartment boxes have not been altered since then.

Although the Wheatley factory has modernized, most parts of the manufacturing process are carried out in the same way as they were years ago. All the interior fittings are assembled by hand since there is no way to automate this sort of precision. The new anodized and powder coated colors enhance the appearance of the boxes, yet keep their traditional satin finish. The craftsmanship of yesterday is carried on today.
