From time to time we will offer vintage and used fly fishing tackle. Please check back often for new additions. We are always interested in purchasing or taking consignments of used cane rods, but visitors please take note: we do not provide free tackle appraisals! Because the value of any fishing collectible is largely based on condition, and because researching values is so time consuming, we can not offer free, sight-unseen tackle appraisals. If you'd like us to appraise your tackle for a fee, please contact us for more information and we'd be happy to assist you. If you've arrived here via a search engine because you've found an old piece of tackle and hope to learn its value, we are very sorry but we are unable to help you without seeing the tackle and charging a fee. Thanks!
Additional Note: All items are covered by our 3-day return policy. The customer can inspect or lawn cast any item for up to 3 days after receipt. If you receive an item and wish to return it, you will receive a full refund for the item provided it's returned promptly in the condition it was sent. All returned items must be insured for the purchase price and packed appropriately. Please contact us before returning any item.
We keep our consignment rates low to help you save money. The single best way for you to decide on an item is to send us a check for it and inspect it yourself. We do everything possible to describe items fairly...it does us no good to send you an item that you will only want to return. Let us know if we can provide additional pictures or if you'd like to make an offer via email.

R.L. Winston 8' 2p 2t for DT 5 line, 3 1/8 oz. Serial number 4204. Winston blond cane, 3x3 node spacing, mirror matched tips. U/L NS screw lock over zebrawood(?) insert terminating in a 6" Western grip, typical Winston wraps tipped red at hook keeper and ferrules, overwrapped Duronze ferrules, nickel silver winding check and hook keeper, gorgeous agate stripper, black guides.
Rod has a very smooth medium action in hand. Only the slightest signs of use, grip and reel seat immaculate, ferrules separate with a nice pop. They sure know how to make a nice casting tool at Winston. Original bag and case. $1,850
Wilson International by Sharpes of Aberdeen, 8'3" 2p 1t for DT5 or 6 line, Serial number 6973. Richly flamed and impregnated cane w/ 3 x 3 node spacing, oxidized brass ferrules w/witness marks, C/P bluish-green silks tipped gold, aluminum winding check, hook keeper, D/L aluminum knurled ring with hooded butt cap and skeleton cork spacer, 6 Powell-type grip, staggered ferrule design with bamboo and brass ferrule plug/stiffener.
Dermont Wilson was a noted authority on fishing the chalk streams of England and published a well-regarded book, Fishing The Dry Fly. He established a mail order tackle business that was later acquired by Orvis. In exceptionally fine condition a very rare Wilson-labeled rod made by Sharpes, the only sign of use being some slight grip soiling and light scratches to the butt cap Ferrules seat smooth and snug with a nice pop, straight as the day it was made. Has a deep flexing action, would be a great rod for bigger water. Labeled for 5/6, I prefer a DT6 and letting the rod do the work. Original bag and hang tag. PVC case. Excellent+. $525
Boxed Orvis Rocky Mountain Twin Presentation Cane Rod Set: Consists of two rods cased in a green felt-lined mahogany case with brass hinges and hasps, as reportedly packaged by Abercrombie and Fitch. Both are well-used but not abused and with a little set removal could be brought to like new-condition. Rods are:
6 ½ 3p., 2 t. 3 1/4 oz. Rocky Mountain for DT5 line, medium action. Orvis impregnated cane, original chocolate translucent wraps, aluminum/L screw lock seat over walnut spacer, 5 1/2 grip, serial number 56743.
A very nice impregnated rod with gorgeous dark cane, overall good condition, slight fishing sets in both tips, bluing wear, some grip soiling remaining after cleanup. One tip ferrule missing its moisture plug. Writing 100%, cane and wraps in great shape.
6 ½ 3p., 1 t. 3 5/8 oz. Rocky Mountain Spinning Rod: Orvis impregnated cane, original chocolate translucent wraps, aluminum double ring seat w/ 10 spinning grip, serial number 56945.
A nice impregnated rod with gorgeous dark cane, well-used with fishing sets, bright ferrules fit nicely. Cane, writing and wraps 100%. The boxed set: $1,395
Paul Young Midge 63 2p 2t. for DT4 line, Serial number 4314, 1966. Richly flamed mottled cane, brown C/P silks over black Perfection guides and Mildrum stripper, dual oxidized aluminum slide bands and mortised cork spacer w/ 5 ½ cigar grip, oxidized truncated Super Z ferrules, number 4314 intact on all sections.
Rod inked in Bob Summers flowing script and in immaculate condition, ferrules still snug, varnish good, some wraps a little dry, slight cork ridging, rod is straight and tight overall with just the slightest fishing set(?) in one tip. At 1 ¾ oz, an infamous rod model that set the standard for light rod fun! Original nylon bag and tube $3,900.
Orvis Deluxe 7 ½', 2p., 2 t. 2 5/8 oz. for HDH line(DT6) line, fast action. Orvis impregnated cane, original chocolate translucent wraps, knurled dual aluminum slide bands with cork spacer, dainty 4 ½ superfine grip, serial number 42141(1965).
A nice impregnated rod in a rarer Orvis model, the Deluxe was inspired by Lee Wulff and produced by Orvis only from 1952-1967! Atypical of most Orvis rods, this one has a crisp, dry fly action which I would think best suited for DT4 or 5 line.
In fair condition, this one is fishable as-is, but could use a little help to bring it back to its original glory. One tip down 1 at the butt end, the size 11 ferrule being reset but not blued. This ferrule was rather crudely lapped and clicks due to a too-loose metal to metal fit. The second tip ferrule is also worn loose and clicks. Both male ferrules appear original, however. Bluing worn on male and female ferrules, grip soiling, wraps a bit dry but original writing in good shape, cane in pretty good condition, could use a polish. Gray poplin bag with hang loop, and well-traveled original case with label. $595
H.L. Leonard Allagash 7' 4p, 2t for DT4 line, serial number 1399. Leonard blond cane, 3x3 node spacing, Chinese red C/P wraps tipped gold at ferrules, Perfection snakes and Mildrum stripper, 5" cigar grip terminating in NS C/R seat with butternut spacer. Ferrules sizes 15, 11, and 8, each section is only 21 1/2" long!
Perhaps the rarest Leonard rod configuration ever made! Only 12 Allagash rods are thought to exist, most of which were made as 8' rods. In extremely fine, original condition w/original bag and labeled tube with HLL engraved brass cap. Rod posseses a very soft and lovely casting demeanor. The ultimate prize for the hard-core Leonard afficianado. $7,500. REDUCED!!! $5,000
Everette Garrison 206 7 1/2' 2p 2t for DT4 line, serial number E-79-3 (1935): Pumpkin color cane/varnish w/typical Garrison spiral node spacing pattern w/mirror matched tips, Halstead size 13 step down ferrules, Perfection stripper, guides and tip tops, transluscent silk at guides w/chocolate brown at ferrules. Expertly refinished, retaining all appropriate markings. Bag is a replacement, but tube and cap are original. One tip has a very short (1/2") clear overwrap just below the tip top wrap), otherwise sections are full length and straight, 6 1/2" Garrison grip exhibits ridging typical of a rod of this vintage, d/L NS pocketed butt cap and slide band.
What can be said of a Garrison that hasn't already been said thousands of times before? Simply the most desireable rodmaker in history and with a limited production of about 650 rods, this is one of a relative few extant in an extremely desireable length and line weight. Built only two years into his vocation as a rodmaker, this is also a very early example, and demonstrates his almost immediate mastery of the art. $11,000. REDUCED $8,000!!
H.L. Leonard Model 66 8' 2p, 3t for DT5-6 line. Leonard blond cane, 3x3 node spacing, Chinese red C/P wraps, Perfection snakes and Mildrum stripper, 6" cigar grip terminating in an aluminum and NS screw lock seat with butternut spacer. Ferrules size 13.
This rod is a bit of an enigma. The bag, which appears to be original(sans hang tag), has pockets for the butt and 3 tips. Two tips are full length, with one tip having a short(1/2) overwrap apx 22 from the tip end. The third tip is down about 4 ¼. All three male ferrules have some minute dents in the slides but all seat nicely. All sections straight and in good restored condition. $1,200
Mark Ruhe Swift River Fly Fishing 76, 3p, 2t for DT4/5 line, 3 ¾ oz. Richly flamed cane, immaculately pressed nodes arranged in spiral fashion, mirror matched tips designated 1 and 2, oxidized NS Super Z ferrules, black Snake brand guides with agate stripper and hook keeper wrapped in translucent cinnamon tipped black, 5 ½ cigar grip terminating in an oxidized C/R seat with mortised cherry(?) burl spacer. Original bag and tube.
This rod is one of only about a dozen Mr. Ruhe of Spokane made for Swift River around 2000 before he quit building in 2006. All aspects of the rod are very competently executed with an attention to detail: very nice and clean planing, wrapping and varnish work. Despite being fished the rod is quite straight and in overall good condition. Some bluing wear to one male ferrule and the C/R seat, varnish could use a wash and polish to remove watermarks, some grip soiling but is otherwise in good shape. Aluminum ferrule plugs, ferrules fit smooth and snug and separate with a nice pop. A fast and tippy rod owing to a gradual swelled butt, great for flies large and minute and their accurate placement. Marked for a 4 line, I like it better with a DT5 to allow more of the rod to do the work. $945
L.J. Downes Rod Company: I was sad to hear my good friend L.J. (Jim) Downes is closing his production rod shop to spend more time with his wife, kids and grandkids .and, to do a little more fishin and less workin! Jim still plans to make a limited number of rods for good friends and best customers as time and inclination permits, which is fortunate for his many fans in the bamboo rod community.
Jims company motto is Cane Rods That Work and he should know: an expert and elegant caster and angler on the stream, Jim knows exactly what makes a rod work, and Ive never cast one of his rods I didnt fall in love with. Jim modestly claims he doesnt make art and focuses on how his rods perform, but I would disagree, feeling these are all quite handsome with an eye for a sort of peppy harmony. We are fortunate to have on offer several of Jims rods, all unused shop rods and/or near mint. Some have been lawn cast only, but none have been fished, and all of them- as his motto claims- work very well indeed!
L.J. Downes Rod Company Quad: 76, 3p, 2t for DT4/5 line. Blond cane w/2x2 node spacing, mirror matched tips, nicely squared bright NS ferrules w/chrome snakes and bright NS hardware wrapped in CP tan thread w/variegated tipping accents with red-tipping at guides, agate stripper, 6 cigar grip squared at foregrip, bright D/L NS cap and ring seat w/figured curly maple spacer. Original bag and labeled Downes tube.
A delightful progressive action rod that bends down into the butt, but not overtly so and a quad, to boot! Mint, as new. Original bag and labeled Downes tube. Offered at $1795.
L.J. Downes Rod Company 73- 15-10 Hollow Prototype 73, 3p, 2t for DT5 line. L.J. Downes Rod Company 76-12 76, 2p, 2t for DT5 line. Original bag and labeled Downes tube.
The swelled butt provides for a crisp, powerful dry fly action with enough power to handle the largest fish, but the fine tips allow for casting delicacy. Jim told me this is his Signature taper, and once you have it in hand youll know why. Mint, as new. Original bag and labeled Downes tube. Offered at $1,495.
L.J. Downes Rod Company Heddon Featherweight 8, 2p, 2t for DT4 line. Richly flamed cane w/3x3 node spacing, mirror matched tips, black snakes and oxidized hardware wrapped in CP chocolate wraps tipped black, agate stripper, 6 cigar grip, oxidized D/L NS cap and ring seat w/highly figured and stained curly maple spacer. Original bag and labeled Downes tube.
This rod has a sweet, medium and progressive dry fly action modeled on the rare Heddon Featherweight series. Mint, as new. Original bag and labeled Downes tube. Offered at $1,495.
L.J. Downes Rod Company Sloans Parabolic 710, 2p, 2t for DT5/WF6 line. Flamed cane in a light caramel ala Jim Payne w/3x3 node spacing, mirror matched tips, swelled butt, black snakes and oxidized hardware wrapped in translucent orange thread, agate stripper, 6 cigar grip, oxidized D/L NS cap and ring seat w/figured walnut spacer. Original bag and labeled Downes tube.
The swelled butt gives a lucky owner the best of all worlds: a powerhouse parabolic in nature with a s. 14 ferrule, but with a swelled butt doesnt suffer as some pure parabolics by a lack of lift when getting large fish near at hand. Mint, as new. Original bag and labeled Downes tube. Lists at $1,595, offered at $1,495.
Ben Turpin 7 2p 2t for DT4: Richly flamed cane, spiral node spacing, bright NS ferrules, mirror matched tips, chrome guides and agate stripper wrapped with cinnamon thread, fancy signature wrap, 6 ¾ Western grip, bright D/L cap and ring NS slide band seat w/figured wood spacer.

A used rod by this Ft. Collins, CO builder, has grip soiling and both tips have significant sets which could be removed to bring her up to like-new spec. Rod feels very light in the hand(hollow built?) with a tippy yet progressive character. $745

From the Abel website: "Winner of the best new freshwater reel for 2018 by Fly Fisherman Magazine and Best of Show at the 2017 ICAST/IFTD industry trade show, the SDF comes on the heels of our move to Colorado: the trout-based surroundings inspired us to take it up a notch.
Based on the SDS (Sealed Drag Salt), the SDF (Sealed Drag Fresh) is a scaled-down version of the award-winning saltwater titan featuring similar porting and a stainless steel / carbon fluoropolymer drag system. A gorgeous, near mint example from one of the USAs most established and credible builders. Id characterize this as a fast rod, with plenty of backbone, with a crisp dry-fly demeaner. This rod has been fished very sparingly by its owner and extremely well- tended. Straight and tight as the day it was made. Immaculate workmanship. $1,750 SOLD!
Thomas and Thomas Classic 7' 2p 1t for DT5 line, serial number 3101(1978). Impregnated. Medium flamed cane, 3 x 3 node spacing. Rod and case evidences no signs of use and are in absolutely pristine condition. Over the years we've made less than 5 baitcasting rods, including one I made for my dad's retirement gift which remains in our family. I love making baitcasters and spinning rods for folks, but there's actually more work in one than a fly rod, hence if we quoted this rod today it would run $2,395. This one, in as-new condition, $1,595. SOLD!
J.D. Wagner Signature Series, Model 380 WEH 3p 2t for 5-6 wt.: The 380 WEH is based on a classic pre-Maxwell era Leonard. The minute I cast the original rod I knew we needed to add the taper to our catalogue. Why? Because its an incredibly versatile rod. Ive fished it with DT5 and 6 lines as well as up to a WF7, fishing everything from the smallest midges to huge hexes, green drakes, hoppers, nymphs and bobbers even huge deer hair mice at night, on which I took my biggest brown trout (11lb 7oz) to date!
I gave this model the nickname Delaware Special but it could just as easily be the Au Sable or Missouri Special as its greatest utility is on big water for trophy fish as it has the quality of backbone and can cast a long line tracking true and will handle some amazingly large fish.
This one was made in August 2007, with hallmarks typical of the period: medium flamed cane, translucent claret wraps with single wrap black tipping, Venneri U/L NS screw lock with highly figured varnished amboena spacer, agate stripper, black guides and tip tops, Western grip, oxidized NS ferrules. In immaculate shape, dead straight, mirror matched tips, 3x3 node spacing, hand-crafted rope-knurled sterling silver hook keeper, ferrules smoothly lapped to a satisfying snug pop. Elegantly signed with varnish and wraps finished to the highest standards of any rod, classic or contemporary. Shows only the slightest signs of use, some scratches on the case. $1,695 SOLD!
Thomas and Thomas Midge 7' 2p 2t for DT4 line, serial number 3713(1981). I can't hide my admiration for T&T rods. Every detail is attended to, right down to the classic, flowing script; female ferrule embossed with the T&T logo with witness marks on ferrules, flawless varnish rubbed down to an understated satin, tips marked 1 and 2, swelled butt speeding up the rod action and adding some power. Rod is in very good shape, excepting some bluing loss on the metalwork. The long list of master craftsmen that have worked under Tom Dorsey- Marc Aroner, Bob Taylor, Tom Moran, Troy Jacques, et al- attests to T&T's preeminence in the world of bamboo rodmaking. $2,450 SOLD!

From Germany comes this lovely rod by noted builder, instructor and author Rolf Baginski. Rod has a very light and delicate action befitting small streams and small flies. The cosmetic detailing is quite astounding, and features Rolf's personally hand-textured and patinized ferrules, reel seat hardware, winding check, ferrule plugs and even the tip tops! Rolf borrowed this decorative technique from his experience as a custom pipemaker, and it recalls the rocky stream bottoms we ply in pursuit of our sport, a very organic visual feel. From Michigan rodmaking legend Bob Summers, this magnificent 7'3" 4-5 wt. is- like all of his rods I've had the pleasure to cast- a casting dream. Possesses equal facility with either a DT4 or DT5 line, those with a faster stroke will love it with a 4, but a more patient caster with a slower stroke will be amply rewarded by a trying a 5. I've often advised people new to collecting and fishing cane that the ownership of a Summer's rod is imperative, such is the quality, integrity and desirability of his work- a career dating back to 1956.
This rod was reportedly made in the 90's, and has had two owners, both gentleman who have reported to have cast it but never fished it. In outstanding condition, I'll take them at their word. Condition is excellent, cork has only the most minute soiling, ferrules seat easily, tell-tale minute cracking at the ferrule tabs indicates it has certainly has been lawn cast, and it's a pity and shame it hasn't been used to it's fullest potential on the water. A new owner can rectify that and enjoy a superlative experience as well as a the pride of ownership of a must-have for any serious rod collector. $2,850. Sold!
